Church weddings will always hold a special place for me, and not just because of how beautiful they can look on the day.
As a Christian myself, my faith has become a big part of my life over the past few years. My husband and I came to faith together, and being part of our church now shapes so much of how we live day to day. Because of that, weddings that take place in a church feel that little bit deeper, knowing the meaning behind the ceremony and the commitment being made before God.

Here’s my reasons why I just love church weddings! …
A ceremony you can fully settle into

One of the things I love most about church wedding ceremonies is the feeling of being able to properly settle into the moment.
Church ceremonies are always much longer and there’s more space to take it all in, from the walk down the aisle to the quieter in-between moments, without everything feeling fast paced. It allows the ceremony to feel calm, intentional and meaningful, both to experience and to photograph in a natural, unobtrusive way.
A naturally varied gallery

One of the biggest benefits of a church wedding from a photography point of view is the natural variety it brings to your gallery.
With a separate ceremony and reception location, you’re not limited to one setting throughout the day. From arriving at the church, to leaving as newlyweds, and then heading to your reception venue, each part of the day has its own feel.
It also naturally creates more opportunities for couple portraits, whether that’s a few quiet moments around the church, in the surrounding grounds, or later at your venue. It all adds up to a gallery that feels full, varied and effortless without needing to over-direct anything.
Walking out as newlyweds to the sound of church bells!

There’s something so special about that moment of walking out of the church together, with the bells ringing and all of your guests waiting outside.
It has such a natural buzz to it, that just-married feeling, everyone gathered, confetti being thrown, and that first walk together as husband and wife. It’s one of those moments that always feels as good as it looks, and a real highlight in any church wedding gallery.
A timeless and meaningful setting

Churches bring a timeless, grounding feel to a wedding day that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.
Whether it’s a small countryside church or something larger, there’s a sense of history and stillness that naturally adds depth to your photos. It’s not just about how the space looks, but how it feels to be in it, especially during a ceremony with such meaning behind it.
Church wedding logistics (and why it’s worth it)

Church weddings do come with more logistics, and I think it’s important to be open about that.
You’re often working across two locations, which means factoring in travel time and being a bit more considered with your timeline. Some vicars have restrictions around where photographers can stand, and occasionally I might be asked to stay further back or limit movement & coverage during parts of the ceremony.
But when everything is planned well, it all fits together seamlessly.
And what you gain in return, the meaning behind the ceremony, the atmosphere, and the moments that come with it, makes those extra considerations completely worthwhile.
Final Thoughts

For me, church wedding photography is about more than just how the day looks.
It’s about what it represents, the meaning behind it, and the moments that come from that. When your ceremony is captured in a natural and unobtrusive way, it creates something that feels genuine, timeless and truly reflective of your day.

I photograph church weddings across Wiltshire, the Cotswolds, Somerset and the wider South West, and I absolutely love capturing the atmosphere and meaning that comes with each one.
